Passionate About India: Unfair to pull Akhilesh down that soon!:
UP elections have always been intriguing and most of the times for the wrong reasons. This is one state where political leaders have always been riddled with controversies, be it from criminalized and caste-based politics, to corruption and scams. But this year, controversy seems to have taken a new shape. With the rise of a young and dynamic leader in UP, the scenario here would change soon. Against expectations, Samajwadi Party (SP) suddenly came out and swept the elections. This sweeping victory cannot be credited to anyone else other than Akhilesh Yadav – a young politician who never projected himself as the Chief Minister, even after the victory. But then, SP read the minds and hearts of the electorate and decided to make Akhilesh the CM. And thus a new star was born in Uttar Pradesh!

Other well meaning fools, nearly 100,000 strong and counting, have gone on to Aircel’s campaign website and ‘joined the roar’. Forgive me folks, I know you are well-intentioned people but what good is your name on a tiger’s picture that says ‘you’re roaring for the tiger’ for a tigress roaring in agony in the forest. Her bleeding paw is caught in a steel-jawed trap. Footsteps hurry towards her. They don’t bode well. She tries to shake her paw free but the steel-jaws bite deeper. She struggles some more. In desperation, she gnaws through her trapped front paw… her anguished roars seem to draw blood from the hills that surround her. But alas, it’s too late... the poachers, bedraggled men with a hungry look in their eyes surround her and spear her with crude lances… she turns around to fight, snarling and swiping with her free paw, but in vain. Her strength ebbs… the roaring shudders to a muffled groan and a once magnificent beast is reduced to a lacerated lifeless body. Her beautiful skin is cut open by the men, its organs and bones removed with an efficiency that tells you that these men have done this earlier… and will do it again.

No wonder, in 2011, real estate was seen as the most corrupt sector during a survey by KPMG with 32 per cent of respondents agreeing to the fact.

The fact that most of the PWD officers are corrupt and the mafias are linked to the bureaucrats and politicians makes it extremely difficult to curb the menace. Further, judicial delays have been acting as a catalyst in giving a free run to this nexus. There are times when one can see a glimmer of hope, when a corrupt PWD official in Dewas in Madhya Pradesh was slapped a fine of Rs.5 crore and three years of incarceration by the local judge as an exemplary punishment as a bulwark against corruption. But then as I said, it is just a glimmer, similar verdicts has to come up from the judiciary that will not only stall the penetration of corruption, but also create right precedence in the minds of the perpetrators.

If just inflation would have been adjusted into fares these ten long years – not having done even that, I repeat, is almost criminal – then the railways would have been richer by 25000 crore rupees per year! Compare that now to the meagre 450 crore rupees that is required to phenomenally reduce the 60-70% deaths which occur on railway crossings! The money thus earned would have not only taken care of all our safety related expenses but also the pathetic speed of growth of Indian Railways since the British left India (for comparison’s sake, China every year adds five times more new tracks than India).

According to Union Budget 2012-13, for the Indian economy this was a challenging year. A number of global and domestic factors militated against the growth that had revived in the last two years. But India has thrived under challenges and India will do so now. The sovereign debt crisis in the Euro Zone intensified, political turmoil in Middle East injected widespread uncertainty, crude oil prices rose, an earthquake struck Japan and the overall gloom refused to lift.
Union Finance Minister in his Union Budget 2012-13 has increased the basic customs duty on standard gold bars; gold coins of purity exceeding 99.5 per cent and platinum from 2 per cent to 4 per cent and non-standard golds from 5 per cent to 10 per cent, In sync, basic duty on gold ore, concentrate and dore bars for refining is being enhanced from 1 per cent to 2 per cent. On the excise side, duty on refined gold is being increased in the same proportion from 1.5 per cent to 3 per cent.

Unlike in India, where election funding is mostly clandestine and is funded primarily with black money, the US electoral system has been legally endowed with formal procedures to direct cash flows into the system, especially for election campaigns. On hindsight, it might appear that therefore, the elections held in the US would be quite transparent and money would play a moderate role in deciding the final winner. Unfortunately, the fact is that irrespective of how transparent the election process might be, money power is quintessential for any political party or any Presidential candidate to perform well in the elections – that in itself undermines the true essence of democracy! Today, the underlined fact is that globally, it is money that makes one win the elections, (and this has been proved through various studies). Period!

The one quality that is most essential for success is ‘courage’. As Winston Churchill once said, “Courage is rightly esteemed the first of human qualities… because it is the quality which guarantees all others.” On the 8th of every March, we celebrate the ‘International Women’s Day’ and the one thought that comes to my mind about women leaders is – would we as women have achieved more if we were more courageous? The answer is a resounding ‘YES’! My favorite leader Sheryl Sandberg, the COO of Facebook since 2008, while speaking at the graduation ceremony of an all-girls college, asked the young girls to answer one question, “What would I do if I were not afraid?” If they answered this question honestly and did all the things they wanted to without being scared of consequences, scared of what others would think, scared to tread the untrodden path; the results would be dramatic, for they could do much more, take more responsibilities and in the process, be better leaders. The reason a lot of women aren’t seen in top leadership positions is because they are afraid… afraid of making their own rules in a “man’s world”. It is not that they are less talented, or that they have less experience and less opportunities; it’s mostly because they are not bold enough to take that extra step. If you want to change the world, if you want to stand out and make a place for yourself, then you must also have the courage to make your own rules and live by them. Women who did that not only achieved personal success but also made the world a better place.

Typos: THE WAY OF THE WARRIOR... AND THE WAY TO WALK IT:
A few weeks ago watching television was a bit like being on Channel One during the Cold War. Every channel worth watching was showcasing some aspect of Russian ingenuity. Take the History Channel for instance. They have this series called Deadliest Warrior which throws warriors from different cultures and civilisations against each other. They compare weapons and tactical trends and physical skills and strengths through statistical data analysis. Then the warriors are pitted against each other through computer generated simulations and a final dramatised battle that decides the winner. Spartan versus Ninja, Shaolin Monk versus Maori Warrior and so on… you get the idea. But that day, they had two cold war buddies locked in battle - The celebrated Green Berets who fought under the star spangled banner and inspired Hollywood hits by the dozen and score took aim in the red corner while the Spetsnaz, the secretive special forces of the erstwhile Soviet Union and the current Russian Federation, spat out a matchstick at them; Special ops speak for throwing down the gauntlet, I guess.

Passionate About India: 1982-2012: TEN DECISIVE CHANGES IN INDIA
Many political pundits and scholars are ascribing many reasons for this latest series of defeats confronting the Congress. Quite a few have gone on to say that the charisma of the Gandhi dynasty is irrevocably fading away. Some uncharitable analysts have even started questioning the credentials of the Congress General Secretary Rahul Gandhi to lead the party during 2014 Lok Sabha elections. I personally think it is too simplistic to start drawing such conclusions every time an election happens. In 2009, when the Congress won more than 200 seats in Lok Sabha elections and about 21 seats in Uttar Pradesh, everyone hailed Rahul Gandhi as a miracle man. Now, with such heavy defeats in the assembly elections, the same sets of people are writing off Rahul Gandhi.

Sutanu Guru: THE SOFTEST STATE IN THE WORLD
Sutanu Guru: THE SOFTEST STATE IN THE WORLD:
About nine months before this happened, an Indian NRI couple Anurup and Sagarika Bhattacharya, working and living in Norway got a taste of European style welfare state authoritarianism. Welfare authorities of Norway accused the couple of not looking aft er their three year-old and one year-old child ‘properly’ and literally snatched them away to be placed in a State-run welfare home. Most of us in India were not even aware of this shocking violation of human rights of an Indian family!

Passionate About India: A Budget for Rahul Gandhi:
- Indira Gandhi as Union Finance Minister
February 28, 1987: “Twenty nine years ago, presenting the country's Budget, Jawaharlal Nehru told this house [that...] we have to strive with all our strength for our planned development by conserving all our resources, increasing production and trying to ensure progressively a more equitable distribution and to thus raise the standards of the great mass of our people…Our principal objectives are the elimination of poverty and the building of a strong, modern, self reliant independent economy,”

Typos: JUST ANOTHER GAME! JUST ANOTHER OPINION!:
So we salvage our tattered reputation; so what if we lost the Tests, we won the CB triangular. We are still the World Champions and Sachin, Sehwag and co. are back in business, so why worry, right? There’s the small matter of looking into the future as far as VVS Laxman and Rahul Dravid are concerned, but hey, it’s all good now. Maybe we will give them a home series or two and then take a fresh look at things. As for Ravindra Jadeja and Suresh Raina, why fix what ain’t broke too bad. The captain has faith in them and what’s an Asia Cup or two between friends. Conversely, if India were not to make it to the finals, scapegoats would’ve been sought and slaughtered and a holy cow or two would’ve ended up in the tannery as well.

COMMON SENSE SIMPLIFIED: SUBSIDISE THE SUBSIDIES
COMMON SENSE SIMPLIFIED: SUBSIDISE THE SUBSIDIES:
Subsidies have always been the most-touted strategy among the political class, especially as it is something that is highly deceptive, completely opaque and totally off -target. This trump card is extensively used by political parties, during both elections and budget to gain mileage. Perceptibly, this policy, which was fundamentally aimed at bridging the socio-economic divide of the society, has increasingly become a tool for politicians to swing electorate towards them. But then there is no secret in the fact that only a fraction of these subsidies does actually reach the poor, thanks to our corrupt system.
